A few years ago, I saw Jeremy Lin play in person during a summer league game in my native San Francisco and his first step is amazingly quick. He blew by every defender at will.

But the story of Jeremy Lin is more amazing.

Growing up in the Bay Area, Jeremy Lin’s dream came true when he played for the Golden State Warrior’s but he had to fight for playing time behind Ellis and Curry.

Next Jeremy Lin headed over to the Rockets and got waived without having a chance to showcase his talents.

Arriving at Madison Square Garden, the center stage of the NBA courts Jeremy Lin got his chance and he shined. He got more exposure than he would have probably ever imagined.

A Chinese Proverb reminds me of his situation.

A famous story is about a farmer who lost his horse. His neighbors told the farmer that he has such bad luck. Days later, the farmer’s horse returned with two more horses. A few days later, the farmer’s son was thrown off riding an untamed horse and broke his leg. Again, the farmer’s neighbor told him that he has such bad luck.

The next day, military officials came to their village to draft young men but because the farmer’s son had a broken leg, the son’s farmer did not have to serve in the military.

Often times, we cry out to the heavens and ask God why certain misfortunes occur. If you look back, what seemed like bad luck was actually a blessing in disguise.

I have had a classmate and family that commit suicide. I learned in life not to play the role of God. I can not control certain situations. Yesterday I had dinner with my good friend in Hong Kong, she told me that a person that lived in a building across from the building committed suicide, jumping off the balcony.

He was in his early 30′s, a doctor, and had a girlfriend. Sometimes people may appear happy on the outside, but we truly don’t know the demons they are thinking about.

Also, do yourself a favor. Before you decide to take your life, go to the hospital and visit cancer patients or anyone with a terminal disease. They want to prolong their life and some people choose to take their on.

A maxim of life I learned, be a Thermostat.

A thermostat controls temperature, but a thermometer merely measure it. If I acted liked a thermometer, I would let outcomes of life dictate my happiness such as failures and rejection. If I acted like a thermostat, I would be able to control my emotions in all outcomes. Don’t let circumstances dictate our level of happiness.

We can only be at the top of our game when we understand that our brains want us to play and be creative.

Behind every successful person is hard work. Talent is God given but skill needs to be refined. The habit of working hard will carry you throughout your life and open opportunities.

Life is messed up in a kind of way so we need to believe that we have the power to change and make it better. Also, we need to accept the truth that life is made up of people no smart than us.

But the difference is that they took action and did not give up when failure arrived.

“The walls are there to weed out those who don’t want it enough.”

We have dreams but too often we make the excuse that we are too old.

The truth is that people who are successful don’t make excuses, they find a way. Colonel Sanders went through hard times but he never gave up.

There is never a perfect time to start anything.
