My grandma played an important role in my life. She taught me how to cook “fly rice” and taught me how to speak Chinglish.

Her Chinglish also resulted in my sub par English grades.
Here are few of her favorites.

(Chinglish – English)

Blender – Brenda
Fly Rice – Fried Rice
Lew Ork – New York
Layfil – Rayfil
Luni-Muni (SF Public transportation)

Sentence example from Grandma.

“I no likey Luni, too long. Add ketchup ah to fly rice, ask Blender come for dinna. Layfil, do homework ah.”

(back to review)
When we lived in Brooklyn as a kid, she introduced me to deli’s and that is when I began my Otaku (obsession) for sammy’s (sandwiches). Unlike most grandparents, she did not force me to be the typical Asian route of being a lawyer, doctor, or engineer.

When selecting a dining place for her birthday, I wanted to give her the very best. In Chinatown, there is only one good authentic Chinese restaurant. Don’t be deceived by the name, there is no Lounge. No attractive models stirring vibrant cocktails but plenty of mouths devouring succulent meats.

Best table.
Make a reservation for the top floor. Avoid sitting in the basement where there is no fresh air. Warning. If you sit on the top floor, the food will arrive fast and waiters will nudge your politely to finish your meal so that the table can be turn over to the next customer. We got a table to the top floor because we promised the hostess that we would be out by 7:30 arriving at 5:30.

Parking.
R & G will validate 2 hours of free parking.

Ambiance.
If you dine on the top floor, the décor resembles most Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong. Private rooms for business people to conduct business.

Service.
Service was on par and attentive. Our plates were changed a few times to discard bones and crab shells.

Food.
-For crab lovers, the salt’n pepper crab ($38) is their house special. With a thin fried coating, the crab is sea – sweet.
-Seafood mix served in lettuce cups ($13) is all about temperature. Hot stir fry contrast cool crunch leaves. A dash of hoisen sauce provided the perfect sweet flavor.
-Half a chicken bathing in sweet soy sauce is a must ($14). Cooked to perfection, the meat is tender and moist. A pillowy bowl of friend rice with laddles of sweet soy rounds out the dish. The secret touch of cooking wine makes this dish on mark.
-Sweet ‘n sour sparibs ($12) displayed the essence of sauce used in cooking sauce. In a thick sauce that demonstrate savory and sweet tones, each pork piece were meaty.
-Spinach w/ dried scallop gravy ($16) ended the meal as a great veggie dish. Vibrant green spinach beneath a layer of savory dried scallops in a thin gravy.

*note:
Similar to French cooking, the measure of a great Chinese restaurant is the ability to make great sauces. The sweet soy sauce and scallop gravy takes years to master.

Budget tip:
try their lunch specials. Most choices are under $10.
