While most 12 year old kids are playing Guitar Hero after school, David Fishman had found his passion early as a food critic. Written by Susan Dominus, the New York Times article features Fisherman’s fearless character.

Food Writing.

Whether you’re writing for a review for Yelp.com or other media outlets, the first thing to understand is that a great food review is about being descriptive.

Often times, people write “the food taste delicious”. This does not help the reader have a better clue about the food. Instead, describe texture, temperature, and taste.

Texture. was the fries crispy? soggy?
Temperature. was it cold like ice cream or hot like it just came out of the oven
Taste. think about the flavor wheel. Sour.Sweet.Tart.Salty.Nutty.

Ambiance.
Listen and be observant.
What kind of music is playing?
Is it cozy, or high-end?

Service.
Did the staff refill water and bring a smile to the table?

If you want to get serious about writing, the Best Food Writing 2008 by Hughes is a great book.
It is a collection of the best written food review for the year.
